What is an optimum key-phrase?
The optimum key-phrase refers to the one phrase that gets the most actual searches with the least competition relative to each other. In the chart below, the optimum key-phrase would be "green widgets". Why? Because it has the most searches relative to the competition it gets. "Competition" refers to the TOTAL number of pages in a search engine's results for a particular search query. 

Although "widgets" and "best widgets" both have more searches, they also have far higher levels of competition. On the other hand, "cheap widgets" has the least competition, but so few searches it should be ignored entirely. This "optimum" approach gets the best results, i.e. abundant, targeted visitors.
